What is suicide?

When someone takes his or her own life on purpose, it is called suicide. Sometimes people try to kill themselves with poisons, such as medicine or chemicals.

What can you do about suicide?

If someone has attempted suicide, call 911 right away. Don’t wait to see if they start acting or feeling sick.

How to prevent suicide:

If you or someone you know is thinking about suicide, get help.

  • Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
  • Take any threats or warning signs seriously. Respond quickly and kindly.
