What is Jerusalem cherry?

Jerusalem cherry is a plant with glossy blue-green leaves and fruits that look similar to cherry tomatoes. It is often used as a decoration around Christmas. It is also called Christmas cherry and winter cherry.

Jerusalem cherry is harmful to eat.

What happens if you eat Jerusalem cherry?

If you eat a few berries or leaves, you may feel sick to your stomach, throw up or have diarrhea.

If you eat a larger amount you could:

  • Get drowsy
  • Have hallucinations
  • Have problems with your heart rate

What should I do if someone has eaten Jerusalem cherry?

If someone has eaten part of a Jerusalem cherry plant:

  • Take all the pieces out of their mouth.
  • Give them a few sips of water or milk.
  • Call the poison center at 1-800-222-1222, chat online or text POISON to 85511.
