Spike Education Program
What is the Spike Education Program?
The Spike Education Program is a child safety program offered to elementary schools in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont for their kindergarten or first-grade classes. The program is held every March for National Poison Prevention Week.
The program teaches children and adults safety tips for preventing poisonings using the Spike Education Kit. The kit features Spike’s Poison Prevention Adventure, a video starring Spike, the poison prevention porcupine puppet. It contains:
- Spike’s Poison Prevention Adventure DVD
- Plush Spike hand puppet for the classroom
- Teacher’s guide for the video
- “Candy or Medicine?” poster
- Classroom activities
In addition, students receive poison center refrigerator magnets and Spike temporary tattoos to take home.
We also offer additional materials here on our website:
- Classroom activities
- Homework activities
- Resources
Every school that completes our online Spike reporting form is entered to win a plush Spike finger puppet for each participating student.
2012 Spike Poison Prevention Adventure Program
Our fourth annual Spike Education Program was another success! We had more than 200 schools sign up to receive materials, and more than 100 schools reported on their activities. Eight reporting schools were selected in a random drawing to receive Spike finger puppets for their students. All the reporting schools are listed below, with our winners in bold.
