Middle/High School Lessons

The NNEPC has developed several lessons for use in middle or high schools.

Lessons on caffeine and energy drinks and electronic cigarettes are available as free downloads from our shop. These lessons are aimed at high school students and include a corresponding trivia games.

The NNEPC also has a limited number of free kits available for schools in Vermont thanks to a grant from the Vermont Department of Health.

Medication Abuse Prevention Kit

This kit, aimed at high school students, includes:

  • Three medication abuse prevention lessons based on the Vermont Health Education Grade Expectations:
    1. Poison Prevention: Covers what poisons are, how to prevent poisonings and what to do in a poison emergency.
    2. Introduction to the Brain: An overview of the parts of the brain and their functions, and the effects of stimulants, depressants and other drugs on the brain.
    3. Medication Abuse Prevention: Provides medication safety tips, defines medication misuse and abuse, offers prevention steps.

Inhalant Abuse Prevention Kit

This kit, aimed at middle school students, contains:

  • Four inhalant abuse prevention lessons based on the Vermont Health Education Grade Expectations:
    1. Poison Prevention: Covers what poisons are, how to prevent poisonings and what to do in a poison emergency. Appropriate for students in Grade 4 and higher.
    2. Body Pollution: Compares environmental pollution to toxins in the body, offers a guide to product labels and product safety. Appropriate for students in Grade 5 and higher.
    3. Danger! Toxic Chemicals: An overview of the parts of the brain and their functions, and the effects of inhalants on the brain and behavior. Appropriate for students in Grade 6 and higher.
    4. Toxic Chemicals and Poison Prevention: A single lesson combining elements of the first three, appropriate for students in Grade 5 and higher.
